The kids continue to dominate! 21 year old Timoshenko is the 2009 WPT Champion

Will it ever end? Someone who looks like he should be playing tag in the school yard has won yet another major poker championship. The 21 year old online poker player, Yevgeniy Timoshenko out lasted over 1,100 players to take down one of the biggest tournaments of the season. He entered the day as the chip leader and ended it the same way.

While Scotty Nguyen was only in 4th place entering the day, he had to be a major concern for the 21 year old. Well, at least we thought he would be. Shannon Shorr did his dirty work for him with pocket tens. Nguyen had called a small raise by Azor and Shorr moved all in on the SB. Azor got out of the way, but Scotty could not fold his 66. The devil’s hand did not come through and Scotty was down to 400,000. It was only a matter of time at this point and Scotty got his money in with A4. He hit trips, but was outkicked by Harder and went to the rail.

Timoshenko continued to hit hand after hand and kept gathering chips. He started the day with almost half of the chips in play and after taking down AJ with a flop of A-10-4 (he hit the only other J on the river), he was well past that point and never looked back.

Shorr was the next to fall as he pushed with 7c6c and was called down by Timoshenko. Timoshenko showed 44 and once again, his luck held up as the board never paired or improved Shorr. It was now Azor’s turn to start knocking out players. He took out both Harder and Grospellier (who had now accumulated enough points for the WPT Player of the Year) and would be head’s up against the latest wonder child of poker.

Azor did not wait long to get his money in and hit the flop. However, once again luck took over and Timoshenko came out on top. Azor made a nice raise preflop and Timoshenko made a very aggressive push with As3c. Azor was behind with his Qc10d, but quickly moved ahead after a flop of QsJs7d. You could smell trouble when the Kc made the turn and almost sensed that the 21 year old Timoshenko was going to pull out yet another miracle river. The feeling ran true as a 10s was shown and he hit his straight.

For his efforts, Azor was handed a check of $1,446,265, a little more than half of the $2,149,960 that Timoshenko took down for winning the title. This is yet another name that we will now have to look out for once the WSOP starts. He was already wearing a Full Tilt coat at the Final Table and will probably look like a walking billboard during the WSOP. We now have another millionaire under the age of 25 that has been created by this wonderful game of poker.
